Frio Canyon Baptist Church

Our History

In the fall of 1987 a small group of people began to meet for church services in the American Legion Hall in Leakey.  On August 21, 1988, the newly named Frio Canyon Baptist Church was constituted with twenty-nine charter members.  The church now began meeting at the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment.  Guest preachers from the surrounding areas led the services each Sunday.  In May 1988 the church voted to became a New Testament church applying for association with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Del Rio/Uvalde Baptist Association.  The church adopted the Baptist Faith and Message as a testament to its beliefs.  On July 31st the Constitution and By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation were adopted.  The constitution and organization service of the church was held on August 21st with Jack Calk, the association director of the Del Rio/Uvalde Association, leading the moving ceremony.   In the fall of 1988 the church purchased three acres of land on south Highway 83.

By 1989 the church had grown to 41 members and in July the church voted to proceed with a building program.  In 1990 The Frio Canyon Baptist church was recognized by the Baptist General Convention of Texas for being in the top 50 per capita contributions through the Cooperative Program.  The ground breaking ceremony was held in October 1992 for the first building, which was completed in early 1993 and the first service was held on March 21st with 91 members.

A second building was completed in March 1994.  In December of that year the church voted to approve a building extension to the south of the church.  Construction began in January 1995.  The new addition was completed in time for Easter 1995.  Membership had grown to 160 members.  By 1996 membership was 178 and by 1998 it stood at 192 members.  Many programs were added such as an adult choir, Vacation Bible School, adult game night, the purchase of a church parsonage, and a church van.

In 1999 a children’s education building was purchased and placed on site.  It was dedicated on August 12th 2000. Also in 2000 the church approved plans to build a new sanctuary.  Construction of the new sanctuary began in July.  In 2003 a children choir was established.  Church membership was 229.
